Univ. Students Build Amazing Ice Chapel & Celebrate Beautiful Outdoor Mass in Michigan
This is so amazing!
University students, parents, and other supporters of St. Albert the Great Catholic University Parish at the Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. built an incredible Our Lady of the Snows ice chapel for the school’s 2021 Winter Carnival.
This is the sixth consecutive year the students built an ice chapel.
Out Lady of the Snows ice chapel also allows the parish to celebrate Mass in compliance with the state’s Covid-19 restrictions.
Pastor and director of campus ministry Fr. Ben Hasse said the chapel, built mostly by engineers, mimics “Scandanavian counterparts,” and includes “colored ice chunks,” “an elevated pulpit,” and ice pews.
The priest also told the Western Journal that “St. Al’s puts the Catholic in Winter Carnival. So it’s kind of a chance to express…our Catholic faith in this kind of creative and fun way kind in the midst of this bigger kind of community celebration.”
Amid pandemic lockdown restrictions throughout the nation, student leader Tanner Sheahan said these events provide “a sense of community.”
“I think it shows that, through God’s grace, we are able to have these events,” Sheahan told the Western Journal. “We can go outside the boundaries here to have mass outside and receive the Eucharist in a unique way and provide a sense of community.”
The ministry will celebrate its final ice Masses on Sat., Feb. 13.
