Sub Tuum Presidium – Ancient Prayer to Our Lady

 

Sub Tuum Presidium

 

This is the earliest know recorded prayer to Our Lady, dating to around 250 AD. It was originally written in Greek and was was used in the 3rd century Coptic Orthodox Christmas liturgy.

 

Pope Pius VI, in 1786 attached a 100 days indulgence to anyone who with a contrite heart recites the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) in the morning and the Sub Tuum Presidium at night. The indulgence is of 7 years if the prayers are recited on Sunday.

We turn to you for protection,

O Holy Mother of God.

Listen to our prayers, and help us in our needs,

Save us from every danger,

O Glorious and Blessed Virgin

 

In Latin

Sub tuum praesidiumconfugimus,

Sancta Dei Genetrix.

Nostras deprecationes ne despiciasin necessitatibus,

Sed a periculis cunctislibera nos semper,

Virgo gloriosa et benedicta
