Saint Clare

Saint Clare

Andrés Sánchez Gallque, “Saint Clare with a Monstrance”, ca. 1600

Saint Clare of Assisi (1193 – 1253) founded, together with Saint Francis, the order of the Poor Clares. The painting above depicts the event in Saint Clare’s life when through her powerful prayer, great evil was overcome. Her convent was about to be attacked by marauding Saracens. Saint Clare, though very sick, caused herself to be carried to the wall. She then had the Blessed Sacrament placed there in a pyx, in the sight of the enemies. Prostrating herself before Him, she begged Our Lord to deliver her nuns from the harm which was about to befall them. At that moment, terror seized the assailants, who fled in panic.
